Indoor and Outdoor Sports in Minnesota

Minnesota vikings Whether in high school, in a university, or as a professional, sports are big in Minnesota. There is a wide variety of both indoor and outdoor sporting activities you can enjoy during each season throughout the year.

In the summer, the golf courses come alive, with five golf courses located in Minneapolis alone. Swimming and diving events run throughout the year, and form a significant component in high school sports. Minneapolis is also the home of rollerblading, with the company Rollerblade© having been founded in that city.

The marathons and half marathons, inaugurated in the year 2009, have attracted thousands of runners, and promise to grow in the coming years. Every October, the Twin Cities marathon takes place concurrently in Minneapolis and Saint Paul. This 29 year old race attracts runners from all over the world, and has been dubbed “The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America.”

Minnesota gophersFor the budding professional athlete, the University of Minnesota has a full fledged Department of Recreational Sports that boasts a full range of aquatics activities, fitness programs, as well as intramural and court sports including basketball, bowling, handball, hockey, soccer and softball.

Plus the University’s sports clubs have active men’s and women’ teams in hockey, lacrosse, rugby and volleyball.

Minnesota is the home of several professional athletics teams such as the Timberwolves (Basketball), the Twins (Baseball), the Vikings (Football) and the Minnesota Wild (hockey). Games are open to the public with ticket purchase of course. They are quite intense when you get into the nitty-gritty of the games. Of course they are seasonal, and you’ll want to check the online schedules at the official websites.

Minnesota twins For those not into competitive sports, there is plenty of fun throughout the year and for people of all ages and fitness levels. In winter, all the frozen water provides plenty of opportunities for ice skating, ice hockey, skiing and snowboarding. In the summer, the beautiful views provide a lovely backdrop for walking, running, cycling and skate boarding.

Whatever type or level of sport you are looking for, you are sure to find it in Minnesota.
