Great opportunities for hunting Big Game, Small Game and Birds

Minnesota birds Minnesota deer Minnesota is well known for its abundance in game for hunting, providing resident and non-resident hunters thrilling hunting expeditions around the year. Birds, small game such as rabbits and squirrels and big game that include deer and bear comprise of the various game animals available for hunting in the state.

Besides there being plenty of game, there are extensive public lands in Minnesota and therefore finding a place to hunt is easy. These include state and national forests, wildlife management areas, waterfowl production areas and national wildlife refuges. Some counties avail their county lands for public hunting while many industrial forest lands managed by forest products companies also allow for public hunting.

In addition to the public lands, the state has plenty of private property open for hunting but hunters are first required to obtain written permission. Shooting preserves are plenty in the state too, which are open to all hunters for a fee. All hunting lands in this area are open during different seasons around the year for different types of hunting including archery, firearm and muzzleloader hunting.

Bird hunters in Minnesota are always looking forward to the exciting bird hunting seasons that offer a wide variety of bird species. Pheasants, waterfowl, geese, grouse, turkey and prairie chicken include the game birds available for hunting in the state.

Over the years, the change in the natural habitat of these birds and human interference has threatened their continued existence. As a result, numerous game farms have been established to breed and rear these birds in their most natural habitat for exhibition, consumption as well as hunting. The game farms breed hunting birds in time for the hunting season during which they are released.

Some game farms in Minnesota are exclusively for bird rearing while others have other game animals that are also available for hunting. Besides game farms, this area boats of a large number of ranches where hunters can find both small and big game for hunting. The most common big game includes moose, elk, bear and the whitetail deer. Ranches have these animals and a wide variety of game birds too, offering hunters a lot of hunting opportunities.

All hunters must first purchase a license from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The department also offers permits to landowners who avail their land for hunting. Once acquired, the permits obligate the landowners to allow public hunting on their private land. To make your hunting mission easier, DNR avails detailed maps indicating which lands in the state are public and private. At the same time, the department provides a schedule of the hunting seasons for each year which includes the opening and closing dates as well as the application deadlines to allow hunters to apply for their hunting licenses in time.

Ranches and game farms on the other hand will have a hunting schedule and hunting guides on their websites.

Non-resident hunters who visit Minnesota around the year will have numerous other recreation activities to enjoy. These include fishing, hiking and boating. There are various lodging options as well from where to enjoy your hunting vacation including cabins, villas and campgrounds. Hunting remains a favorite pastime in this state, drawing hunters from around the country each year, evidently due to the area’s abundance in game animals and hunting lands. Whether you find your thrill in bird hunting, small game or big game hunting, Minnesota is the place to go for a most enjoyable hunting expedition.
