Minnesota Equifest

A Horse Carnival where you can learn a lot about horses.

Minnesota equifest Horses are fascinating creatures. They are Sensitive, sometimes strong willed but very loyal to their masters. They can correctly be termed as Man’s second best friend.

Minnesota Equifest is a one of a kind Horse carnival where one can learn a lot about horses. Everything about Horses is available at the show held inside the Minnesota state Fairground. Steer wrestling is particularly a crowd favorite. It tests the skill, agility, speed and precision of the cowboy who races on a horse to catch up with a calf, rope it and immobilize it.

Another crowd favorite is lassoing a calf from a fast moving horse. Just like steer wrestling, the feat is accomplished with explosive speed in a matter of seconds. Other acts include Barrel dancing that is very popular with the kids.

The great thing about the Minnesota Equifest is that it doesn’t offer only the regular rough and tumble events beloved by the outdoor types, it features demonstrations and lectures by acclaimed experts like how to whip up chuck wagon style meals. One of these experts, Mr. Richard Shrakes teaches new riders the art of guiding a horse through an obstacle course. This is a valuable skill as it builds confidence in both man and beast. Horse psychology and ground work also forms part of his instruction routine. Would-be horsemen and women are shown the correct placement of bits and saddles to minimize stress.

Inevitably, some will want to actually purchase horses or their accessories. The Minnesota Equifest offers a dazzling banquet of these items, many made by the finest craftsmen in the world. An important part of this horse festival is the showcasing of the dying art of being a Farrier. A farrier according to the English definition is a specialist in equine hoof care, including but not limited to trimming, balancing and the placing of shoes. A farrier is basically a vet and blacksmith all rolled into one.

Since horses spend most of their time on their feet-or hooves- any infection or inflammation could cause the animal to be severely constrained, or even worse, permanently crippled. The work of a Farrier is physically demanding. Over ninety percent of Farriers are male, however women wishing to learn about horse care without breaking a sweat can attend classes at the lecture room situated within the Fairground.

Volunteers play a critical role in ensuring the Minnesota Equifest is a success. Notable players include; The Minnesota Rodeo Association, Minnesota High School Equestrian Association, Minnesota Farmers Association and the Minnesota Hoofed Animal Rescue Foundation. Farriers, who consider themselves a breed apart, are represented at the Fair by the Brotherhood of Working Farriers Association and the Guild of Professional Farriers.

The Minnesota Equifest sadly runs for just two days. Admission hours are between 9 am and 7 pm on Saturday with the show closing two hours early on Sundays. Your investment for this premiere Midwest event is a mere ten dollars for adults and nothing for kids under the age of twelve. The quickest route to the State Fairground would be approaching from the East and motoring down I-94west interstate to Snelling Avenue and making a quick right turning north. One could however just follow any caravan of horse trailers on the I-94 and still make it there.
