Historic Bardwell-Ferrant House of Minneapolis

Experience Minnesota in the Victorian times.

The Bardwell-Ferrant house is a historic Victorian house located at 2500 Portland Ave South in Minneapolis. Itís a unique building listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is one of Minneapolisí few examples of exotic Revival Architecture , featuring arches and copper onion-dome towers.

It was built in 1883 and has since undergone a $150,000 restoration. Some of its historic features include the original stained glass windows and ceramic mantel pieces. In addition, the fireplaces are original wood burning features as well. The houseís Moorish Revival architecture makes it a rarity in Minneapolis. It has an impressive history, as it was originally built by Charles Bardwell in 1883, and was purchased by Emil Ferrant in 1890 who hired architect Carl Struck to transform it, adding towers, arches and stained windows.

It was built and tricked-out (as we say today) in the era of architectural extremes and intended to be exuberant. Later in 1985, it was bought by historic building restorers Maxwell and Stewart, who made the necessary repairs to it and rented it out. However, the decline of the Phillips neighborhood where it is located did not spare this historic house. It gradually fell into disrepair and is now on the market for sale. Several restorers have expressed interest in buying it, but have yet to do so.
